Here is some information that you don’t think of every day 6 to 8 times a day the air in your home circulates through the air ducts of your HVAC heating and cooling system. This pushes the dust, allergens like pollen or pet dander, and just the dirt and debris of every day living through your home over and over again. This re-circulation can cause a build-up of contaminants and other debris in the ductwork.

The filter in your furnace or return grilles will catch some of the debris, but over time, or possibly following any remodeling projects. or worse yet lets say your suffering from shotty duct installation. Any or all of these symptoms can and will lead to a buildup of gunk inside your ductwork that threatens not only the efficiency of your system but we think the indoor air quality is very important and should be addressed in every home. You have the oil changed in your car, what about the maintenance in your home? Isn’t the air your breathing important? If it’s been over 3-5 years since your last air duct cleaning you really should have it done. Finding the right air duct cleaning company is easy to do with a little research. Do yourself a favor and do that research. Please don’t ever respond to a $99 special you get in the mail! If it seems to good to be true it’s probably not true and in this case it never is.

When and if you ever do look inside the register, this is the moment when most people realize there is a good reason to schedule an air duct cleaning. Air duct and furnace cleaning is a must after any type of disaster in the home whether it’s fire damage or water damage. The vent cleaning is nice, but what about any small left over bacteria, fungus, or even mold that may remain in the duct work after a professional air duct cleaning service is complete? Most air duct cleaning companies offer a sanitizing product and the product itself is important but I would challenge that the technicians applying this fogged in sanitizer are equally as important. In the Portland and Vancouver areas we are conscious of the environment, Sporicidin is an EPA registered product for air duct cleaning and it is recommended over bleach as a cleaning agent to combat bacteria, mold, and fungus. Sporicidin offers 6 months of bacteriostatic residual protection of treated surfaces. This means not even the flu virus stands a chance in a sanitized air duct. We keep our kitchens clean because that is where we make our food and we sanitize all surfaces, what about all the air we breathe in our homes? We think it should be the best!

Dryer Vent Cleaning

Dryer vent cleaning is a service that should be included with each and every whole home air duct cleaning service. The company that is there providing the service was hired to clean the ductwork in the home, and the duct that leads from the back of your dryer to the outside of your home is typically one of the dirtiest. When cleaning a dryer vent the technician should first check inside the dryer where the lint trap is and using a long, thin brush clean under the lint trap. Then turn the dryer on and check the connections in the back of the dryer to make sure none of the dryer exhaust leaks into your home. Then begin the actual dryer vent cleaning by running a brush (with little metal burrs on the edges to scratch the inside of the duct) through the duct cleaning it from the outside to make sure that all of that lint stays out of your home. This brush is attached to Revolution rods that run from the outside of the vent all the way back to the back of your dryer polishing each inch of the dryer vent itself. This process may need to be repeated several times to assure a clean dryer vent. Finally the technician should confirm the air is flowing like it should be out of the back of the dryer all the way through the duct out of your home.
